a The epidermal layers appear blue due to stain that is used to show up the epidermis.
b No melanocytes are noticable in the stratum basale because they are not actively spreading melanin to the epidermal layers.
c Note the light brown melanocytes in the stratum germinativum mixed in with keratinocytes.
